April 16-28, 2009 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, presented her paper "New Bodies of Knowledge: Society, Science, and the Woman Writer" at the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference in Lexington, KY. There she also chaired the six-paper panel that she had organized on the representation of the woman writer in Spain's XIX Century.

April 3-5, 2009 - Fulvia Alderiso, Flor Maria Buitrago, Luba Iskold, Ilana Levy, Kellen Mickley' 09, and Harry Miller (OIT) participated in the annual NEALLT (Northeast Association of Language Learning Technologies) conference "Teaching, Learning & Assessing with Technology," April 3-5, Lafayette College. Fulvia, Kellen, and Luba attended a workshop entitled "Revolution, a Software for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment" and, together with Harry Miller, had a meeting with colleagues from Swarthmore, Skidmore, Carnegie Mellon, and Pitt to discuss innovative ways to integrate cutting-edge technologies into the teaching and learning of foreign langauges.

April 3, 2009 - Mirna Trauger, visiting lecturer in Spanish, mentored and accompanied three students to a conference titled: "Educators, Artists and Activists Working in Latino and Latin American Communities" at Lafayette College. Three Muhlenberg students presented papers: Stephanie Flackman '10 presented a paper titled: "Pesticide Poisoning in Costa Rica: Connecting the Application of Toxic Chemicals to Effects on Human Health". Ashley Rider '09 presented a paper titled: "Volunteer Work in Argentina: An Unseen Side of the Country". Gabrielle Luongo '11 presented a paper titled: "Los mineros de Las Juntas: The Dangers, Benefits and Controversies Involved in the Gold Mining Industry of Costa Rica".

March 10-14, 2009 - Dr. Luba Iskold, associate professor of Russian, presented her paper "Producing Digital Videos: A Sociocultural Approach” at the CALICO with IALLT 26th Annual Conference “Language Learning in the Era of Ubiquitous Computing” hosted by Arizona State University.

March 2009 - Mirna Trauger, visiting lecturer in Spanish, presented a paper titled: "Parodia e intertextualidad en La llegada de José Luis González" at the VIII Congreso Internacional de Literatura Hispánica held in Puntarenas, Costa Rica.

March 6-7, 2009 - Dr. Joan F. Marx, Dept. Chair and professor of Spanish, presented a paper and moderated a panel at the XXX Conference of MACLAS (Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies), "Latin America and the World: Challenges and Opportunities," at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The paper she presented was: "From the Frying Pan Into the Fire: Political Repression and Social Oppression in Alicia Kozameh's 259 Saltos, Uno inmortal." Dr. Marx also served as the moderator of another panel: "Image and Power in Colonial Art and Architecture."

January 21-26, 2009 - Dr. Lisa Perfetti, associate professor of French and Director of the Faculty Center for Teaching, attended the annual meeting of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in Seattle, WA.

January 2009 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, was quoted in an article about immigration issues in the Lehigh Valley.

November 2008 - Dr. Eileen McEwan, assistant professor of French, presented a paper titled "Moi et les autres: Language and Identity in Migrant Quebecois Literature" at the international conference for the American Council for Quebec Studies in Quebec City.

October 2008 - Drs. Kathleen Harring, Lisa Perfetti, associate professor of French and Director of the Faculty Center for Teaching, and Kathryn Wixon, professor of French and Director of the French Program, attended the annual POD (Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education) conference held in Reno, Nevada, October 22-25, 2008.

August 2008 - Dr. Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, led the teacher training for the Elementary Spanish instructors at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. The special focus of this year's training was the effective use of technology in and out of the language classroom. Under the title, the workshop "Lo que no puede la tecnología. y lo que sí: La nueva pedagogía comunicativa" sought to develop a practical understanding of the instructor's key role in a communicative language classroom.
