The Department of Sociology & Anthropology
ALUMNI
Michael Kurtz '10 Since my last day at Muhlenberg, life has been anything but boring -- I’ve moved to a new city, moved into a new apartment, and even kicked off a new band. On the job front, I began working in a social media analysis firm -- a job that I really credit my background in sociology. The company was looking for someone with a strong social science background, and I was looking for a job related to my senior thesis, which, in the broad sense, asked the question, ‘How do people interact with technology?’ In my job, I run analyses, write up reports and work on a wide range of projects. I really enjoy this position, as I get to employ a lot of the same skills and thought processes that drew me to sociology.
On 26 March 2010, department graduates Stacie Feldman '04 and Tara Trudnak '05 were welcomed back to campus for an informal
discussion with current students in the department.about how they put their sociology and anthropology degrees to work after graduation. Stacie graduated from Muhlenberg in 2004 with a degree in
Sociology and now works as a researcher with Mathematica Policy Research in Princeton, NJ. Tara graduated from Muhlenberg in 2005 with a degree in Anthropology and received her M.P.H. in Global Health from the University of South Florida. She is currently a doctoral candidate in USF’s College of Public Health.
Elana Alfred '06 is the Program Coordinator for The Workmen's Circle New York Region office. She writes, "along with event planning and putting together programs that we have regularly, I will be focusing on re-starting a social action committee. So there will be much social justice/activism involved, coalition building, and community outreach." In addition to her paid work, Elana is also engaged in social activism after work. She adds, "I am hosting a Greenpeace houseparty as the first major national event they are having for their Project Hot Seat Campaign which is to stop global warming. When I was in Washington this summer for the Change It program we launched this campaign so I'm really excited to take part in it!"
