Notes From the Director:
What should I do while my child is in class?

We know: MCDC classes are too short to go home and get something done but they're too long to sit in your car, doing nothing. Right? We can help.

Parents are always welcome to stay right by the studio in which their children's classes are taking place. But you're also welcome to relax in any of the College's many public areas! Here are some recommendations - and consult this handy map.

Seegers Union offers comfortable seating around a toasty fireplace in winter - as well as the Java Joe's coffee cart and the General's Quarters, where you can grab a snack. The side entrance to Seegers is just across the quad from Brown Dance Studio and just across Chew Street from the Trexler Pavilion studios.

The Baker Center for the Arts (the white building adjacent to the Trexler Pavilion) offers both a lounge with vending machines and the Martin Art Gallery, featuring exhibitions of the work of major regional and international artists. (For 75 cents, the coffee's pretty good!)

In The Trexler Pavilion, there are handy seating areas both in the Box Office Lobby and in the glassed-in lobby just outside the Baker Theatre. (Berg students call this area "the Fish Bowl.") Just take the elevator down from the Upper Level Studio.

The Trexler Library is just down the block from the performing arts buildings. You're welcome to peruse the Library's collections and exhibitions, or just relax in one of the many terraced lounge areas.

You're welcome to use the campus WiFi network while you're waiting. Contact the Muhlenberg Dance Office for login information.

MCDC Day at Master Choreographers

A spectacular evening of ballet, contemporary dance, tap and jazz, Master Choreographers showcases exciting new dance works choreographed by nationally and internationally acclaimed guest artists and faculty.

MCDC students of all ages — and their parents: We encourage you to join us Saturday, Feb. 9th, at 2 p.m. for MCDC Day at Master Choreographers. After the performance, join us for a Talkback Session with the MCDC faculty. Your dance teachers will tell you all about the experience of performing on the Muhlenberg Mainstage, and you can ask them all your questions!

This season's Master Choreographers concert will feature a staging of the second movement of Viva Vivaldi, the Joffrey Ballet's signature work, choreographed by Gerald Arpino and staged for Muhlenberg by Trinette Singleton, co-artistic director of Repertory Dance Company and longtime Joffrey dancer.

The evening will also feature works by: Charlotte Boye-Christensen, artistic director of the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company; Corrie Franz Cowart, co-artistic director of Co-Art Dance; Heidi Cruz-Austin, alumna of the Pennsylvania Ballet; Dorrell Martin, founder of LEON Dance Arts NY; Shelley Oliver, director of Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers; and Jeffrey Peterson, former dancer with Danny Buraczeski's JAZZDANCE;

Several MCDC student teachers are among the dancers selected for this season's Master Choreographers concert. Come and see your teacher perform!

Spring Performance:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Preparations for this year's Spring Performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is well underway!

Please note that the Saturday performance has been moved to 1 p.m.!

MCDC staff and teachers have begun preparations for the big event. This month, you will receive a handout in class describing details on days and times of rehearsals and the performances in May for those dancers interested in being a part of the show. All MCDC spring dancers are welcome to participate in the performance, although it is not mandatory and there are no extra fees to be involved.

Please keep your eyes peeled for more information!

Meet the MCDC Famly
Paige Mathieu is a fifth-grader at Western Salisbury Elementary School. This is her eighth year dancing with MCDC; she started in Creative Movement when she was three. She currently takes intermediate ballet, intermediate modern and intermediate jazz. When she isn't dancing, she likes to sing in her church choir and school chorus, play the piano, hang out with her friends, and read.

Paige says it's hard for her to pick her favorite form of dance. "I love the soft and gentle nature of ballet. I love the creativity of modern. I love the music of jazz."
