THE WINTER’S TALE
by William Shakespeare
adapted + directed by: Troy Dwyer
Nov. 20-24, 2013
A demon bear hunts its victims along the tree-lined shore of Bohemia. Hundreds of miles across the ocean in Sicilia, something just as nightmarish stalks a young queen—her husband’s jealous madness. As both monsters pounce, Shakespeare’s exhilarating, unpredictable fantasy is set into motion. This is The Winter’s Tale, the spellbinding story of two intertwined kingdoms gripped by an icy prophecy.
Written in 1610, The Winter’s Tale is among Shakespeare’s final plays; it shows us the Bard at the height of his imaginative genius, and at his most brilliantly experimental. Part suspenseful tragedy, part rollicking comedy, part grisly fairy tale, the play defies convention while showcasing some of the most breathtaking language ever heard on the English stage. Original music and dance by Muhlenberg student artists infuse this lean, quick-paced re-envisioning by Troy Dwyer, whose award-winning 2011 production of The Tempest raised some eyebrows and some heart rates. Enter: classical theatre with a 21st-century wildness. Exit, pursued by a bear.
