Theatre & Dance
Opportunities to Create & Perform
Every day, our students work on Mainstage theatre and dance productions, as performers, designers, technicians, directors, choreographers, and administrators.
The Theatre & Dance Department sponsors a production program that reflects our core belief: theatre and dance must be an intellectual and a practical pursuit at the same time. Serious training and intense attention to student-artists create a collaborative environment in the Department, rather than a competitive one — empowering students to be creative and independent.
Each year, we produce six major theatre productions, three Mainstage dance concerts, and numerous studio theatre and dance performances. All of these performances take place in the Department's state-of-the-art production facilities. And students are the heart and soul of every performance.
Mainstage dance concerts range from the annual Dance Emerge concert, featuring deeply personal student pieces in the intimate Dance Studio Theatre, to the Master Choreographers performance, much larger in scale and scope, and featuring choreography by our acclaimed faculty and guest artists. Other dance opportunities include a series of Informal Concerts each semester, showcasing student composition, and dance ensembles such as the Jazz Tap Ensemble and the Six Meters improvisational dance troupe.
The six theatre productions are as diverse in scale and style as possible, ranging from experimental blackbox productions in the Studio Theatre, to big, Broadway-style musicals on a proscenium stage. In addition, the Muhlenberg Theatre Association (MTA) presents at least two student-directed studio productions and several smaller projects each year.
Extensive production opportunities are available for students with every field of interest:
- actors, in performances of every style, both musical and non-musical
- dancers, in both dance concerts and musical theatre productions
- directors, including at least one student-directed Mainstage production each year
- designers of scenery, costumes, lights and sound
- stage managers
In addition, students have a chance to work as running crew, stitchers, carpenters, electricians, box office staff, marketers, and house managers for every production.
In addition to the department production program, a tremendous variety of performance ensembles give majors and non-majors alike the opportunity to sing, act, dance, and create. Student-directed ensembles, productions and concerts are a vital element of the vibrant performing arts community.
In the summer, Muhlenberg plays host to a summer-stock musical theatre season, Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre, acclaimed throughout the region for producing high-quality musical theatre for patrons in the area. MSMT productions feature Muhlenberg students working alongside professional actors, musician, directors, and designers to create large-scale musical theatre. All SMT cast and staff members are provided free housing and paid a stipend.
