men's soccer team For the first time since 1997, the Muhlenberg men’s soccer team is ranked in the top 10 in a national Division III poll.

The 5-0 Mules moved from No. 12 to No. 9 in the D3soccer.com poll after posting a pair of shutout wins last week. Unscored upon in its last four games, Muhlenberg is one of 15 remaining undefeated, untied teams in Division III.

In the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings, the Mules moved from No. 23 to No. 19.

In 1997, Muhlenberg was ranked No. 8 for a couple of weeks late in the season in the NSCAA poll. (The D3soccer.com poll is in its third year of existence.) That team – of which current head coach Sean Topping was a co-captain – captured the Centennial Conference championship and won two games in the NCAA Tournament.

The current Mules are 5-0 for the first time since 2005, which was the last time they won the CC title. They haven’t been 6-0 since 1994.

The ranking and undefeated record will get put to the test in the next two games, both on the road. On Friday, Muhlenberg travels to Johns Hopkins (ranked 10th in the region by the NSCAA and receiving votes in the D3soccer.com poll), and on Wednesday, the Mules take on defending Centennial Conference champion Swarthmore (ranked third and 10th nationally by D3soccer.com and the NSCAA, respectively).
