Women’s soccer

Kyle Plifka Nicki Cronin This week’s rankings show that the Centennial Conference is very strong in both women’s cross country and men’s soccer, and they also show that Muhlenberg is one of the reasons why.

The Mule women’s cross country team climbed up to a season-best No. 5 in the Mideast Region rankings after its impressive showing at the Paul Short Run on Saturday. The top three teams in the region (Johns Hopkins, Dickinson and Haverford) are all from the CC, and with Swarthmore at No. 7, the CC has five of the top seven teams in the rankings.

Muhlenberg placed eighth out of 13 Division III squads at Paul Short, trailing seven other regionally ranked teams, and finished ahead of 12 schools from higher divisions. Sophomore Nicki Cronin (right) was the second Mule runner across the finish line.

Men’s soccer, meanwhile, is ranked 21st in Division III by D3soccer.com and is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The 6-2 Mules went 1-1 last week, falling at Swarthmore (ranked 11th by D3soccer.com and 21st by the NSCAA) in double overtime and shutting out Haverford at home.

In the NSCAA regional rankings, CC teams account for six of the 10 spots, with Johns Hopkins, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg and Dickinson joining Muhlenberg and Swarthmore.

Muhlenberg has been ranked in the top 25 in the D3soccer.com poll all season, thanks in great measure to its defense, which has allowed only five goals in eight matches. Junior co-captain Kyle Plifka (left) is the veteran of the defense, which ranks 23rd in Division III with five shutouts in eight games.
