Mother Nature, Opponents Rain on Mules

Four Muhlenberg teams hit the road on a miserable rainy day, and the results were as undesirable as the weather.

For the second Wednesday in a row, men’s soccer traveled to New Jersey for a non-conference game, gave up two early goals and lost. CJ Graetzer Montclair State, ranked 23rd in Division III by D3soccer.com and fifth in the South Atlantic Region by the NCAA, scored twice off of rebounds (one a rebound of a penalty kick) in the first 22 minutes. Junior Nate Squire converted a penalty kick for his third goal of the season with about 20 minutes left, but the Red Hawks (12-2-2) held on for the 2-1 win.

The other three teams all went to Swarthmore needing wins to improve their Centennial Conference playoff chances, but none were able to come through.

Women’s soccer came the closest. After giving up two first-half goals to Swarthmore, which is ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the NCAA, the Mules came back in the second half to cut the deficit to one. Sophomore CJ Graetzer (right) scored the goal in a heavy downpour with Jackie Price 21:48 to play, but Muhlenberg managed only one shot the rest of the game and fell, 2-1, for its third straight one-goal loss.
