Four Mule Fall Teams Ranked

ranked teams Alumni coming back to Muhlenberg this weekend can see four Mule teams that have earned rankings.

The Muhlenberg field hockey team, which plays Friday night against Johns Hopkins, continues to receive votes in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll. The 4-1 Mules garnered 78 points, the second-most of teams outside the top 20. The Centennial Conference is well-represented in the poll: Franklin & Marshall is ninth, Haverford (the Mules’ opponent on Wednesday) is 12th, Ursinus is 16th, and Gettysburg is just behind Muhlenberg with 75 votes.

The women’s cross country team, which runs at Cedar Crest on Saturday morning, is ranked eighth in the Mideast Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Mules were sixth in the preseason poll and have dropped the last two weeks despite being idle since running their lone meet to day, the Lehigh Invitational. The CC boasts the top four ranked teams in the region in Johns Hopkins, Dickinson, Haverford and Gettysburg, respectively.

Football, which hosts Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon, received 10 votes in the first American Football Coaches Association poll of the season. Hopkins is ranked 16th in the same poll and 24th in the D3football.com poll. Both teams are 3-0 with an average margin of victory of more than 24 points. The Mules are the only team in Division III to have played three games and allowed only one touchdown this season. Muhlenberg and Hopkins have combined to win or share every CC title but one since 2001, and the winner of this game has gone on to the NCAA Tournament every year but one since 2001.

The athletic finale on Homecoming Weekend is the men’s soccer game Saturday night, matching Muhlenberg against Johns Hopkins. The 4-1 Mules moved up from ninth to seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic poll. CC teams are clustered near the top of these rankings as well: Dickinson is No. 2, Swarthmore is No. 3, and Franklin & Marshall is No. 4.
