preseason practice The Muhlenberg women’s basketball team received 31 votes in the D3hoops.com 2012-13 preseason poll.

The Mules, who are scheduled to open up three weeks from tomorrow against Centenary (N.J.) in the 31st Scotty Wood Tournament, went 23-6 last year and won their fifth Centennial Conference championship in seven years. They earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year and defeated Catholic in the first round. In the second round, Muhlenberg led sixth-ranked Mount Union up until the last minute before falling, 61-55.

In the final polls of last season, Muhlenberg was ranked 22nd by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and received 12 votes from D3hoops.com.

The Mules return 13 players from last year, including four of their top five scorers. The one exception, however, is the all-time leading scorer in Muhlenberg and CC history.

Muhlenberg could get an early chance to test itself against another team that earned preseason recognition. King’s is two spots ahead of the Mules with 42 votes and will appear in the Scotty Wood Tournament, playing Mt. Aloysius in the first round.

Johns Hopkins, which won the CC regular-season title each of the last two years, received 17 votes. The first of the two regular-season meetings between the rivals is slated for December 8 in Baltimore.

This is the sixth time in the last 11 years that the Mules have appeared in the D3hoops.com preseason poll. They received votes in 2006 and were ranked 10th in 2009, 20th in 2002 and 2011 and 24th in 2008.
