Michael Long Senior tight end Michael Long of the Muhlenberg football was named to the D3football.com preseason All- America first team.

D3football.com selected Long to its All-America third team last season following his breakout 2013 campaign. The Sporting News and Lindy’s Sports also named the Highland Park, N.J., native to their preseason All-America first teams.

Long caught 47 passes – the second-most ever by a Mule tight end – for 525 yards and four touchdowns in 2013. He was the second-leading receiver and a blocking tight end on a prolific Muhlenberg offense that averaged more than 34 points and 400 yards per game.

His catches were important ones, too: Of Long’s 47 receptions, 32 went for first downs, including 13 on third down and one on fourth down.

Long, who will enter the 2014 season with 75 career catches, just 11 short the school record for tight ends, also was a big contributor on special teams. He returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown against McDaniel and blocked a field goal himself against Moravian.

Long is the seventh Mule to be named to the D3football.com preseason All-America team, which was first released in 2000.

The Mules will kick off their 2014 campaign Saturday, Sept. 6, at Wilkes. The Centennial Conference will hold its preseason media event the day after tomorrow. Fans can participate by sending questions in advance via Twitter, using the hashtag #CCKickoff14, or to the Conference’s Facebook page.
