In 2011-12, Matte Award Is Mat-tie

Spencer Liddic, Shelby Smith When Spencer Liddic was being recruited to play basketball at Muhlenberg, then-coach Dave Madeira showed him the Matte Award cup in the trophy case and told him, “you can help us keep this for the next four years.”

Liddic did help the Mules retain possession of the Matte Award for four years, although he has to be content with sharing it as a senior. The 2011-12 Matte Award standings ended in an 8-8 tie. Liddic and fellow senior Shelby Smith (field hockey, softball) represented Muhlenberg at the annual luncheon, held on Moravian’s campus.

Muhlenberg had a seemingly commanding 7-3 lead after sweeping a basketball doubleheader at Moravian on November 15, then went more than five months without a Matte victory. By that time the Greyhounds had taken an 8-7 lead, but the Mules salvaged the tie with an 8-1 men’s tennis win last Friday.

The tie was the fourth in the 25-year-history of the award, donated by the family of the late Aaron Matte (Muhlenberg ’70). Muhlenberg has won or shared the award for each of the last nine years, including ties in 2007-08 and 2011-12.
