The Muhlenberg football team recently named three returning starters on defense as its captains for the 2014 season.

Linebackers Jeremey Thomas and Gene Blanco and safety Tyler Cerbo, all rising seniors, will lead the Mules in the upcoming campaign, which is scheduled to begin at Wilkes on Saturday, September 6. Last year, the defense ranked 18th in Division III with only 14.5 points per game allowed. Muhlenberg finished 8-3 and earned a postseason bid for the 10th time in 14 years.

Thomas (above left) earned second-team All-Centennial Conference honors in 2013 after ranking second on the Mules with 59 total tackles and fourth in the CC with 15 tackles for loss. The stat-sheet filler also recorded 6½ sacks, five pass breakups, an interception, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.

Blanco (above center) led Muhlenberg with 84 total tackles in his first season as a starter at inside linebacker. He added seven tackles for loss, including two sacks, three pass breakups and an interception.

Cerbo (above right) received All-CC honorable mention after notching 38 tackles to go along with a team-leading six pass breakups and two interceptions in his first season as a starter.
