Women’s lacrosse season preview

Spencer Liddic It’s Tuesday, so that must mean it’s time for more honors for Muhlenberg basketball seniors Spencer Liddic and Alexandra Chili.

For the third straight Tuesday, the two stars earned recognition for their success both on and off the court. They were both named finalists (10 men and 10 women) for the Jostens Trophy.

Alexandra Chili The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most outstanding men’s and women’s Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy models the Rotary International motto of “Service Above Self” by recognizing those who truly fit the ideal of the well-rounded Division III student-athlete.

Both Liddic and Chili have earned first-team All-Centennial Conference honors each of the past three seasons and were named second-team Academic All-Americans last week.

They are just the seventh pair from the same school, and first since 2008, to be named finalists in the same season in the 15-year history of the award. They are also just the second and third Mules to make the final 10, joining Mark Lesko, who was a finalist in 2002.

Liddic, who led the Mules to their first CC title game since 2001, finished his career with a conference-record 1,015 rebounds and 46 double-doubles. He ranks second in program history in rebounding and scoring (1,707).

Chili helped the women’s squad win its third conference title of her career and broke the conference scoring mark in the process. In addition to her record 1,966 points, she also holds the CC record for career threes (328).

The recipients of the awards will be announced in conjunction with the Division III Men’s Championship Tournament in March. The Rotary Club of Salem, through its Wooldridge Scholarship Fund, will award $1,000 to the scholarship fund of the recipient’s institution in his/her name.
