South Mountain Middle School – Community School Liaison
The incoming Scholar in Service to PA serving with South Mountain Middle School (SMMS) will work directly with the school’s Community School Director. The Scholar will be responsible for continuing to develop the school’s volunteer program and recruit volunteers to support in and out of school time activities aimed at increasing positive behaviors at SMMS. The Scholar will also assist in developing a sustainable process for sharing information about the Community School model at SMMS, its progress, activities and developments with community at large. The liaison will have the opportunity to engage with numerous other volunteer initiatives at the school including Family Fun Night and Book Blasts.
The Literacy Center – Adult Learning and English Language Instruction
The incoming Scholar in Service to PA serving with the Literacy Center will be expected to sustain the burgeoning partnerships built between the Center and the College the last two years. In doing so, the member will further develop a volunteer recruitment plan with an intentional focus on engaging student volunteers while staying within new credential guidelines, recruit/orient/train/retain volunteers for at least one ELL-Muhlenberg Student conversation group and assist in the development and training of returning and new volunteers as the Center transitions from one-on-one to small group tutoring.
Jefferson Elementary – America Reads Coordinator
The Scholar in Service to PA serving as the America Reads Coordinator at Jefferson Elementary will coordinate the expansion of Muhlenberg College’s America Reads program (currently serving only one school) to this secondary site. Expanding the program to Jefferson is a logical fit as Muhlenberg College has worked in partnership with the school for over 20 years. Being able to broaden this relationship to include opportunities during the school day will increase impact of involvement. America Reads tutors serve as in-class assistants working with individual and/or small groups to increase literacy skills with the goal of having children reading at grade level by the third grade. The Coordinator will organize and implement volunteer recruitment efforts, program orientation, continued training for volunteers, and retention efforts to have volunteers continue throughout the school year (not only a semester long commitment). In addition, the Coordinator will be expected to participate in the America Reads program as a tutor.
St. Luke’s Hospital/Union Terrace Elementary School - Reading Rocks! (Health and Literacy)
The Scholar in Service to PA serving with St. Luke’s Hospital Community Health will have the opportunity to deepen the College’s engagement with St. Luke’s current school-based initiatives. In particular, the member will support health literacy at Union Terrace Elementary. Some tasks may include coordinating and monitoring a grade-wide reading competition, organizing a Dr. Seuss Day event and serving as reading mentor at the school. This year, the Reading Rocks! program can only be implemented in one classroom and the hospital would like to engage college student volunteers to support the program in a full grade (up to 5 classrooms).
