How many times during your senior year did you wish you knew someone "in the real world" that you could contact for advice? By serving as a mentor to two Muhlenberg seniors, you get the chance to give back to your alma mater in a way that will be extremely helpful to current student athletes. At the same time, you will know current seniors who can keep you informed about campus events and changes. This is a great way to stay connected to Muhlenberg College.
But that's not all! In addition to serving as a mentor, this program is designed to help you enhance your skill set by working with a mentor of your own. We are offering you the chance to build a relationship with a more experienced Muhlenberg College alum as a member of the cohort of Recent Alumni Mentors.

What will I be expected to do?
In the Spring of the Junior year, selected students will be invited to participate in a mentorship experience that will last through graduation. Two student athletes will be matched with each alumni mentor (also graduates of the athletic program). The mentor's role is to challenge students to think carefully and make intentional decisions about life after college. The mentor may serve as a guide, a friend, an advisor and/or a leader.
You will be connected to the other Recent Alumni Mentors and encouraged to utilize them as a networking resource during the year that you serve as a mentor. You will also be able to determine the amount of contact you wish to initiate with your mentor.

How much time will be involved?
This depends on your availability and the initiative of your mentees. We recommend that you make plans early on to meet your mentees in person, but much of your communication is likely to be by phone or email. The initial meeting(s) could take place on campus or you may want to invite your students to meet you at your graduate school or place of employment, if this is possible. It is recommended that after an initial "getting to know you phase" that the mentees contact you at least once a month. Similarly, you would be asked to initiate contact with your mentees periodically. The Senior Year Experience Director will prompt you with information about campus happenings and questions you may want to be asking your students at various points during the year.

Will my mentees be expecting me to find them a job?
Let's hope not! Of course, not knowing what the future holds is anxiety producing for most seniors; but this program is designed to help students find their own way – not to pave that way for them. Some participants will be job hunting, while others will be applying to graduate or professional school. In either case, your role will be to ask them questions like, "What is your field of interest and how have you explored it so far?" Based on their response, you might offer suggestions or ask additional questions, like "What skills are you developing this summer that you will use in your future job?" or "What role has being a college athlete played in your experience at Muhlenberg?" Or, you may be prodding them with even more basic questions like, "So, what are you thinking about doing after graduation?"

I'm not a career counselor. Am I really qualified for this?
A successful mentorship is a trusting relationship that brings people together in an ongoing relationship aimed at developing the competence, skills and character of the mentee. A mentor is a person who can ask provocative questions and provide decision making support. Mentors are good listeners, who want to help others bring out strengths that are already there. If you have these skills, you are qualified. And, if you have questions or need direction during the year the Director of the Senior Year Experience will serve as your resource.
