What is a Mentorship?
A Mentorship is a trusting relationship that brings people together in an ongoing relationship aimed at developing the competence, skills and character of the mentee. A mentor is a person who can ask provocative questions and provide decision making support. Mentors are good listeners, who want to help others bring out strengths that are already there.

The Senior Athlete as Mentor and Mentee
Senior athletes are uniquely positioned to utilize the leadership, discipline, coaching, time management and other skills developed as a student-athlete in a mentoring relationship with younger student-athletes. This opportunity to convert the skills you have developed into skills you can develop in others brings the athletic experience to a culmination in a way that will make the skills easily transferable to a job or graduate school experience.
At the same time, the senior athlete is matched with a recent graduate of the Muhlenberg College Athletic Program. This Alumni Mentor will serve as a resource and sounding board through the summer after the junior year and throughout the senior year. Not only can the alumni mentor help you clarify your career goals by asking provocative questions, but the mentor can help to address transition issues of concern to many seniors.

What will I get by participating?
The alumni mentor's role is to challenge you to think carefully and make intentional decisions about life after college. The mentor may serve as a guide, a friend, an advisor and/or a leader. Having a mentor will give you more incentive to reflect on your experiences as a student-athlete. You will have an additional resource person to consult as you consider your options for life after college.
You will improve your verbal and written communication skills through regular interactions with your mentor and your mentees. In addition, you will be helping to strengthen the bond between yourself, the College Athletic Program, and alumni ready to give back to Muhlenberg. This is an important part of the transition from your role as a student to your active life as a future graduate of the College.

The Role of First- Second- or Third-Year Student Athletes
Student athletes who are not seniors can benefit from being matched with a mentor who is a senior at Muhlenberg. This mentor will be able to share information and skills he/she uses to be a successful student athlete, like effective time management, class scheduling, healthy decision making and balancing multiple priorities. In addition, the mentor is another person who will be able to listen to concerns, provide problem solving guidance, and help you navigate the system of resources available on campus. Your mentor may prompt you to think about choosing major, developing skills through campus activities or internships, and planning your future.

How much time will be involved?
This depends on you. You will be in charge of your relationship with your mentor, but it is recommended that after an initial "getting to know you phase" you will contact your mentor at least once a month. Similarly, your mentor may touch base with you periodically. We recommend that you make plans early on to meet your mentor in person, but much of your communication is likely to be by phone.
In addition, seniors will have the opportunity to apply the leadership skills you have been developing during your first three years of college by serving as a mentor to two underclass students in your sport. With direction from the Assistant Athletic Director, the Senior Year Experience Director, and your coach, you will be expected to serve as a role model and resource to your mentees beginning in the fall of your senior year.
