KELLY COOK
Class of 2004
Social Work Student at Columbia University

kmc2119@columbia.edu
typical day: I am in my second year of a Master's of Social Work program at Columbia University. I spend 3 days of the week interning at a special education preschool, and 2 days a week in classes. At the preschool I do 'play therapy' and 'case management' for the children on my case load. Case management typically includes working with teachers, parents, and school district administrators to make sure the students are getting the services and help that they need.

exciting news: I will be graduating in May with my M.S.W.

insights: Although my career path now is not directly related to communication (media related), in social work you use interpersonal communication skills when working with clients. I also feel that many of the classes I took as a Communication major, especially Race and Representation and Children and the Media, were very applicable to social work and other related fields. In fact, last year I emailed the professor I had for Race and Representation (Kate Ranieri) to tell her how helpful her class was to me during my first year at Columbia, where cultural competency is a huge part of the curriculum.
