Chinese Communication, Political Economy of Labor, and Information Technology
Yu Hong's research centers on ICT and development, political economy of global communication, China's information and communications industry, and information labor. More specifically, Yu Hong has been systematically examining China's ICT development in order to provide a critical assessment of not only the global neoliberal discourse of ICT4D but also China's 30 years of "reform and openness." Her dissertation explores Chinese working-class formation in high-tech information and communications as a crucial aspect of China's reintegration into transnational capitalism. Her peer-reviewed articles have appeared in the International Journal of Communication and Javnost-The Public.
