Christopher Simpson, a professor of communication at American University, is a respected scholar and investigative journalist, with numerous publications on propaganda, democracy, human rights issues, and national security. Much of Simpson's work has centered the intersections of power and academic knowledge-including his Science of Coercion: Communication Research and Psychological Warfare, 1945-1960 (1994) and Universities and Empire: Money and Politics in the Social Sciences During the Cold War (editor, 1999). Simpson's Muhlenberg lecture scrutinized the social implications of geographic information systems (GIS) mapping software.
