5.2 MEDICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE
In any case where a future medical absence is known (such as maternity or planned surgery), you must submit an Application for Leave of Absence in advance of your absence. Your doctor's statement must be attached, detailing the dates of your expected absence. A medical release also is required from your attending physician before returning to work. You will be paid during a medical leave for that portion of time which your sick leave credits (and vacation credits, if desired) cover. After you have exhausted your sick/vacation credits, your medical leave of absence continues, without pay, for a maximum total period of six months. A maternity leave is treated in the same manner as other medical leaves. For information on a child care leave to extend beyond the medical leave, refer to the section on Personal Leaves of Absence.
