- Meaghan Healy '08 has received a teaching & study award through the Fulbright program for Argentina. Meghan is a business and Spanish double major. She has worked on an Honors Thesis on nonprofits and has studied abroad. Her research project will involve studying the intersections of poverty and education.
- Melissa Detrick '09 won the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic/Mellon Undergraduate Fellowship. Melissa is a History major and one of 10 undergraduates selected nationally to participate in a research seminar at the University of Pennsylvania.
- Brooke Steinhauser '08, , double majoring in Art and Theatre, has received the Katzenberger Foundation Art History Internship at the Smithsonian Institution. She will serve in the education department at the National Portrait Gallery, working with collections research and supervising urban youth.
- Erica Cohen, Laura Stein and Jaclyn MacFarlane presented a symposium paper at the national conference for the American Education Research Association (AERA) in New York City.

- Christopher Kovats-Bernat, associate professor of anthropology, provided an affidavit concerning the social and political situation in Haiti for a US Federal immigration hearing. The hearing concerns political asylum for a Haitian woman and 5 children. The woman, with anti-government ties, was raped (and now pregnant) by pro-government partisan gang members.
Art Studio
- Carol Heft's work will be shown in the exhibit “Ensemble” at the Blue Mountain Gallery in NYC. The exhibition features the collaborative, individual, and simultaneously conceived work of three of New York’s finest contemporary artists.
- Amze Emmons, assistant professor of art, received an Individual Creative Artist Fellowship Grant from the Pennsylvania Arts Council. Emmons also took third Place in the highly competitive 2008 Miami University (Ohio) Young Painters Competition.

- Elizabeth McCain, associate professor of biology, published a case study titled "When Drug Sales and Science Collide," in the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science. This explores the conflict between drug sales and science, through the eyes of a fictional Merck drug representative who has been put on the Vioxx® account in Feb. 2001.

- Roland Kushner, assistant professor of business, will perform this Fri., May 2, at the Banana Factory, 25 West Third Street in Bethlehem. This is part of the First Friday celebration in South Bethlehem. Roland will take the stage from 6:30 until 9 in the Binney&Smith Gallery, which also features the work of visionary photographer John Isaac.

- Jim Bloom, professor of English, chaired and organized a session titled "Philip Roth and the Visual Arts" at the annual meeting of the American Literature Association in San Francisco over Memorial Day weekend.
- Grant Scott, professor of English, published a review essay of Tracy Chevalier's Burning Bright, in the latest issue of "Blake: An Illustrated Quarterly." The novel is set in 1790s London and features William Blake as a character. It's not worth reading, though her earlier Girl with a Pearl Earring is.
- Jeffrey Ethan Lee, adjunct professor of English, was published on the UNESCO sponsored site, The Other Voices International Project. This is a cyber-anthology that erases the boundaries of nations, ethnicities, religions, cultures, and age to publish world's best poetry. - Jeffrey Ethan Lee, adjunct professor of English, was part of a panel at the Associated Writers and Writing Programs Conference (AWP). His talk was about how authors can create book tour events. He also represe nted Many Mountains Moving Press as Senior Poetry Editor at the AWP Bookfair, the largest national gathering of literary and small presses.

- Lisa Perfetti, associate professor of French, presented a paper at a conference at Hofstra University called "Humor in Romance Literatures." The paper was titled "Laughing at Learned Women in the Late Medieval French Farce." She reports that no one laughed at her presentation (except when she was hoping they would!).
Health Professions
- Susan Kahlenberg, assistant professor of media and communication, attended a two-day curriculum development conference for Undergraduate Public Health in Crystal City, Virginia on July 14 and 15. Muhlenberg was selected through a competitive application process to participate in this education initiative.

- Ed Bonekemper '64, adjunct professor of history, will present "How Robert E. Lee Lost the Civil War" at the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Society in Mt. Gretna this week.
- Ed Bonekemper '64, adjunct professor of history, addresses the Lancaster Sons of the Revolution and then the Lancaster DAR on "Virginian Slavery and the American Revolution." On May 6&7, he will be speaking at the Smithsonian Institution and then in Darlington, MD on "Grant and Lee: Victorious American and Vanquished Virginian."
- Daniel J. Wilson, professor of history, recently presented "Polio, Rehabilitation, and the Lessons of History," to a meeting of the Pennsylvania Society for Respiratory Care held at Seven Springs Resort in Western Pennsylvania.
- Mark Stein, assistant professor of history, had a Turkish edition of his book published. "Guarding the Frontier: Ottoman Border Forts and Garrisons in Europe," has been published in Istanbul under the title Osmanli Kaleleri Avrupa'da Hudut Boylari.

- Erika M. Sutherland, associate professor of Spanish, presented her paper “On the Love of Cobardes and Cuyos: Discourses of Domestic Violence in Nineteenth Century Spain” at the Modern Language Association's annual conference in Chicago in December.
Leadership and Greek Affairs
- Sisters from Delta Zeta (Xi Iota Chapter) attending four workshops and won 12 awards at its Region Day. Awards included: Philanthropy, highest chapter GPA in the region, Outstanding Large Chapter Award, Outstanding Region 2 President Award (Immediate Past President Amanda Clifford). The region covers New Jersey and Eastern PA.

- Mike Huber, associate professor of mathematics, has had "00" (Zero raised to the zeroth power) published in Convergence, a journal of the Mathematical Association of America. - Byungchul Cha, assistant professor of mathematics gave a presentation on his research "Chebyshev's bias in function fields" at the spring eastern meeting of the American Mathematical Society 2008, at New York University.
- Linda McGuire, associate professor of mathematics, had the paper "Long Cycles in 2-Connected Triangle-free Graphs" appear in the journal Ars Combinatoria Vol. 86 (2008). This paper is the result of joint work with D. Bauer, N. Kahl, and E. Schmeichel.
- William Dunham, Truman Koehler Professor of Mathematics, presented a talk titled "When Euler Met l'Hospital" at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego on Wednesday, January 9, 2008.
- Mike Huber, associate professor of mathematics, presented "Using the Sympodium to Support the Teaching and Learning of Modeling" at the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego. He also moderated a contributed paper session and attended two editorial board meetings for a journal and NSF grant of which he is a part.
- Penny Dunham, professor of mathematics and computer science, attended the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego, Jan. 5-9. She presented two papers while there: "The 'Write' Transition to Abstract Mathematics" and "Show Me Your Data: Statistics for Millennials."
- William Dunham , mathematics, won the Beckenbach Book Prize for his book "Euler: The Master of Us All."
Media and Communication
- Lora Taub, Chris Borick and Jon Nelson '09 are leading the HYPE (healthy youth peer education) program, which begins Monday and runs through July 18, in Walson Hall. It's a collaboration with Lehigh Valley Hospital. Participants will learn about social marketing, spoken work, media education, and digital storytelling.
- Kate Ranieri, visiting professor, was an invited guest lecturer at Lehigh University, Monday April 21. She spoke to women's studies majors on Rebels and Revolutionaries: Female Activists in American History, 1800-Present. Kate presented elements of her current documentary on reproductive justice and the Allentown Women's Center.
- Ara Osterweil, assistant professor of art and film studies, participated in the Society of Cinema and Media Studies Conference held in Philadelphia. She chaired a panel on "The Pedophilic Imagination" and presented a paper titled: "Invasion of the Child Snatchers: The Pedophilic Imagination of American Independent Film."
- Paul McEwan, assistant professor of media and communication and associate director of the film studies program, chaired a panel at the Society of Cinema and Media Studies Conference held in Phila delphia. The panel was "Early Cinema History" and he presented a paper titled: "Fleeing the Burden of History: The Sound-era Version of The Birth of a Nation."
- David Tafler, associate professor of media and communication, gave a presentation as part of a workshop titled: "Architectures and Designs of Global Media Circulation, 1858-2008." The workshop was part of the Society of Cinema and Media Studies Conference held in Philadelphia.
- Jeff Pooley, asst. professor of media and communication, had his edited book, The History of Media and Communication Research: Contested Memories (co-edited, with David Park), published by Peter Lang. The book includes chapters by Pooley and Sue Curry Jansen, professor of media and communication ("Walter Lippmann: Straw Man of Communication Research").
- Susan Kahlenberg and Michelle Hein '05 had their paper "Progression on Nickelodeon: Gender-role stereotypes in toy commercials" accepted for presentation at the Broadcast Education Association Conference April 16-19, 2008. Their paper won Second Place in the Debut category in the Gender Issues Division at BEA.
- Sue Curry Jansen, professor of media and communication, had her article, "Designer Nations: Neo-liberal nation branding -Brand Estonia" published in the current issue of Social Identitities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture (Routledge).
- Sue Curry Jansen, professor of media and communication, had her 2002 book published in a Chinese edition by The University of Fudan Press, Shanghai, China. The book is titled "Critical Communication Theory: Power, Media, Gender and Technology" and was translated by Cao Jin.

Music
- Doug Ovens performed his percussion work, "Brightly Shining," in NYC on the National Association of Composers, USA, concert on 6/9/08. Performing with Ovens was Jim Thoma, lecturer in Percussion . "Brightly Shining" is a new version of a work from Ovens' critically acclaimed solo CD, Seven Improvisations.
- Ty Hooker-Haring '09 will be playing bass behind Lindsay Rush as the opening act for Pat Benatar at the House of Blues in Atlantic City Sat. night. The concert is sold out.
- The Muhlenberg Chamber Singers traveled to Lafayette College on Saturday and participated in a Choral Festival with Lafayette, Moravian,and DeSales.
Philosophy
- Lawrence Hass P'11, professor of philosophy, published a philosophical book for magicians titled "Transformations: Creating Magic Out of Tricks." The book has received outstanding reviews and has become an international bestseller among magicians. In December 2007, Hass lectured on magic and performed at Princeton University.
- Lawrence Hass P'11, professor of philosophy, will lecture and teach at The World Magic Seminar, a major international gathering of magicians in Las Vegas. Hass will also lecture and perform at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, May 18-27, 2008.
Political Science

- Eric Feld '09 was awarded first prize for research, writing and presentation at a conference by the Center for Russian and East European Studies and the European Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
- Lanethea Mathews-Gardner, assistant professor of political science, and Kirill Meleshevic '08 presented a paper titled "Did the UN Contribute to the Decline of US Civic Engagement?" at the Midwest Political Science Association Conference.

Staff Activities
- Marjorie Lauer, administrative manager of the Graver Arboretum, won a blue ribbon at the Bethlehem Garden Club's flower show. Lauer prepared a photo display on the topic of "Conserving Graver Arboretum." The blue ribbon was in the Education category, and Lauer also won a National award in the same category.
- Capital Campaign DVD "The Talents Entrusted To Our Care" DVD received a gold award in the Hermes Creative Awards of Arlington, Texas. There were over 4,000 entries. Kudos to videographer and editor Scott Stoneback and producer Stacey Prohaska (development).
