Lehigh Valley Partnership

The Math Science Partnership of Greater Philadelphia seeks to improve the region's math and science education.  The ultimate outcomes will be increased student achievement in math and science, more qualified teachers, and world-class math and science instruction that continuously evolves in response to research on how students learn most effectively.

Lehigh Valley Initiatives
One benefit of this project is that it emphasizes partnerships between school districts and higher education institutions.  In the Lehigh Valley, five area colleges and the Da Vinci Center of Science and Technology are working with middle and high school teachers and intermediate units to improve math and science instruction in eight area school districts.

Lehigh Valley Partnership initiatives are as follows:

1.  Teacher Networking and Professional Development Opportunities
2.  Professional Development for K-16 Disciplinary Faculty
3.  Recruiting a Diverse Pool of Candidates into Science and Math Teaching

When and Where Lehigh Valley Math Symposium # 3 will be held in Shankweiler 109 at  Muhlenberg College on Thursday, April 6, 2006.  Parking is available along the circle off of Chew Street or in the staff parking lot behind Shankweiler off of 26th St. The co-conveners of this session are Christa Wolak of Allentown School District and Ned Schillow of Lehigh Carbon Community College.

 Slated agenda:
1)  A mile wide and an inch deep—what really are the essentials?  Identifying the core ideas in a crowded curriculum

       2)  Best practices:  Another chance to share teaching ideas and activities

       3)  Quantitative literacy:  Nationally, of every 400 entering high school 9th graders, only 180 go on to higher education, and only 1 majors in math.  What do we want math literacy to be?  (And it’s not going to be solving for x!)

       4)  Math symposia for the 2006-7 academic year

All participants are encouraged to bring along about 25 copies of a short handout lesson or activity as a best practices take-home handout that they are willing to share with the other participants.

RSVP:   If you plan to attend, please respond to Ned Schillow at nschillow@lccc.edu so that appropriate preparations can be made for refreshments.

Research Seminar on Molecular Evolution at CedarCrest College

When: Wednesday, April 19 (4:00 PM)

Where: Science Center 136

Who: Adam Eyre-Walker, a noted expert in molecular evolution.
