The Results Are In……drumroll please…
Top Seeds: The football team got into the end zone and spiked the ball too, winning the Mule Madness Challenge and finishing with 60.6% percent participation with the bonuses. The cross country and track teams held on with a nice finishing kick, hitting the 58.7% mark. The bronze medal goes to the men’s and women’s basketball teams at 45.5%. The hoop teams claim they did not lose, but the 30 and 35 second clocks just ran out. Apparently, they could not jack up enough three-pointers down the stretch, but a respectable effort.
Fourth place went to the men’s and women’s soccer teams. At 42.3%, they were just a corner kick or a penalty kick away from taking third place. Considering they were in sixth place just a week ago, this was a valiant effort. If only they could have had some additional injury time. The baseball/softball partnership finished fifth at 40.5%, sliding into home just ahead of the field hockey and golf teams, who registered a 40.1% participation rate……just a penalty corner or a short 9-iron bring taking the fifth spot.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse and the wrestling team finished seventh and the volleyball and tennis teams finished eighth…..Double faults, but there is always next year.
The Sleeper: At the start of the campaign, the Swami had the cross country and track teams as the sleepers. Thank goodness they hurdled and vaulted into second place. The crystal ball appreciates the efforts and knows that it was a “high jump” from fifth, where they started. Let’s call them the Wichita State/Florida Gulf Coast of Mule Madness.
Upset Alert: The soccer teams were the upset alert at the start of the year. The bracketologist almost had to issue a red card to the soccer teams, while they were floundering. But, a good sweeper and a solid keeper brought them up to fourth place, so they did not make the bracketologist look too bad. I expect the soccer teams to be “headed” in the right direction next year and make a strong “pitch.”
Longshot: The longshot pick before MULE MADNESS started were the two tennis teams and the volleyball team, which were paired together. Zonked. Bad pick. Don’t go to Santa Anita or the Sands. The Swami has been quite good at predicting the top three, but after that it’s been a bust.
Overview: Prior to MULE MADNESS, the participation rate for former athletes had been hanging around the 12 percent mark. The campaign has been an amazing success. With bonuses, the percentage participation has risen to 44.4%. The Swami says THANK YOU! Muhlenberg College says THANK YOU!
Real March Madness: As for the Real March Madness on the hardwood, you may recall the Elite Eight prediction before the tournament began: Louisville, Duke, Gonzaga, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Indiana, and Miami. Seven of those were alive and in the Sweet 16. The crystal ball said Louisville wins it and Michigan would make the Final Four. Not too shabby. Wichita State, Florida Gulf Coast? Poor Duke, Indiana and Michigan State. A final note – the Big East as we knew it is dead. Yet, two men’s teams and THREE women’s teams from the Big East are in the Final Four. Nothing is certain except change…….until next year, Swami Out.
