VOLLEYBALL, FIELD HOCKEY, MENS SOCCER SEEK TO IMPROVE STANDING
Volleyball: home vs. Gettysburg and Washington, 11:00.
Muhlenberg (14-7, 4-2) enters the day in fourth place in the Centennial
Conference. Gettysburg (15-5, 6-0) leads the pack and is ranked second in
the Mid-Atlantic Region. Washington is winless. A sweep would all but
assure the Mules of a spot in the CC playoffs, but even a split would
leave them in a good position. Gettysburg won all 14 previous series
meetings with Muhlenberg.
Field Hockey: at Gettysburg, 1:00. The race for the three
remaining Centennial Conference playoff spots (Washington has already
clinched) is quite a scramble. Seven of the nine teams in contention have
between one and three losses. Two of them are Muhlenberg (5-7, 2-3) and
Gettysburg (6-8, 4-1). Last year, the Mules defeated the Bullets (3-1) for
the first time since 1993. Of Gettysburgs eight losses, six were to
top-20 Division III teams and one was to a Division II team.
Mens Soccer, 4:00: at Western Maryland. Muhlenberg (7-4,
3-2),
ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, will look to avenge one of its
toughest losses of 2000. Last year, Western Maryland overcame a 2-1
deficit while a man down and went on to win, 3-2 in double overtime. The
Green Terror (8-4, 2-3) is ranked ninth in the region. The Mules hold a
22-5 series lead and had won 14 in a row before last years game.

Who: Johns Hopkins (4-1, 2-0) at Muhlenberg (3-2, 2-1)
What: Muhlenbergs second straight home game against an
undefeated Centennial Conference team. A loss would all but eliminate the
Mules from title contention. Hopkins is trying to keep pace with Western
Maryland in its quest for its first CC title. Both teams received votes in
the AFCA Division poll, Johns Hopkins seven and Muhlenberg four.
When: Saturday, October 13, 1:00
Where: Scotty Wood Stadium
On the Air: Greg Kadetsky, Justin Deutsch and Jon Eddy will call
the game live on WMUH 91.7 FM. To listen
in, go to the WMUH Web site
and click on Real Audio.
Series Record: Johns Hopkins has won six of the last seven meetings
to forge a 16-16-1 series tie. Since 1989, the home team has won all but
two games, and five of those games were decided by six points or fewer.
Last year in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins scored 23 second-half points to win
33-20 in an entertaining shootout that featured more than 1,000 yards of
total offense.
Take Me to Your Leaders: Both Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins figure
prominently among the Division III statistical leaders. For the Mules,
sophomore Matt Bernardo is second in scoring (16.8 points per game) and
25th in rushing (124.4 yards per game); senior Joshua Carter is 23rd in
both all-purpose yards (166.8 yards per game) and punt returns (14.3 yards
per return); and the team is 28th in scoring offense (35.8 points per
game). The Blue Jays rank fifth in pass efficiency defense (62.6 rating
points) and 17th in total defense (234.6 yards per game). Senior Matthew
Andrade is 11th in field goals (1.2 per game).
Scouting the Blue Jays: Johns Hopkins improved to 4-1 for the third
time in five years by defeating Ursinus, 13-7, last week. The Blue Jays
have given up seven points or fewer in each of their four wins, but
allowed 50 to No. 5 Bridgewater in their loss. Hopkins held Ursinus to 154
total yards a week after limiting Gettysburg to 136 and has not allowed a
passing touchdown all season. Senior linebacker Marc Della Pia, the team
leader with 36 tackles, made nine against Ursinus to become the third Blue
Jay to be named CC defensive player of the week this year. Senior Rob
Heleniak is the leading passer in the CC, with 950 yards to his credit.
His top target, senior Zach Baylin, ranks fifth in CC history with 162
career receptions.
Scouting the Mules: Muhlenberg, idle last Saturday, is looking to
rebound from a 28-25 overtime loss to Western Maryland two weeks ago. The
Mules scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to force overtime, then took
a brief 25-22 lead in the extra period. Matt Bernardo rushed for 175 yards
and all three scores, giving him a school-record 28 career touchdowns on
the ground. He has scored at least two TDs in every game this year and
needs two more to tie the school record of 16 in a season.
Despite several injuries, the Mule defense held the Green
Terror to 273 total yards 139 below its average. Senior P.J. Villani
stepped in at middle linebacker and made a career-high 11 tackles.
Muhlenberg ranks second in the CC in both scoring offense and scoring
defense (19.0 points per game).

* WOMENS SOCCER *
Who: Gettysburg (9-4, 6-0) at Muhlenberg (12-2, 6-0)
What: A showdown between the only two remaining undefeated teams in
the Centennial Conference. Since every other team in the CC has at least
two blemishes on its record, the winner will have the inside track on
hosting the first CC Tournament in two weeks. Muhlenberg is ranked fourth
in the Mid-Atlantic Region; Gettysburg fifth.
When: Saturday, October 13, 1:00
Where: Varsity Field
Series Record: Gettysburg has never lost to Muhlenberg in 10
all-time meetings, winning nine times. Last year, when the teams met as
the only undefeateds in the CC, the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The three
previous meetings were all 2-1 Bullet wins, twice in overtime.
Scouting the Bullets: Gettysburg extended its winning streak to a
season-best four games with a 1-0 victory at Johns Hopkins on Wednesday.
Freshman Jenny Line, who had scored a goal in each of the Bullets
first five CC wins, set up junior Ashley Froman for the lone goal in the
30th minute. Line has scored all of her team-leading 18 points (seven
goals, four assists) in CC games. Freshman Christina DiTucci is second on
the team with four goals and five assists. Gettysburgs four losses
are to the top three teams in the region (New Jersey, Messiah and
Elizabethtown) and No. 6 William Smith.
Scouting the Mules: Muhlenberg extended its winning streak to a
school record-tying 10 with a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Franklin &
Marshall on Wednesday. Freshman Rebecca Armstrong scored her fourth goal
of the season for the game-winner with seven minutes left in sudden death.
The Mules trailed 1-0 at halftime, but tied the score in the second half
on the first career goal for sophomore Sharon Seggel. The Diplomats
goal ended junior Kim Laurinos unscored-upon streak at 710 minutes;
she ranks second in the CC with a 0.63 goals-against average. Sophomore
Dawn Iberer leads Muhlenberg and is second in the CC with 10 goals. The
Mules are 19-1-1 in their last 21 CC games and have won 11 straight CC
home games.
