A shin injury suffered while studying in Australia last semester, combined with her asthma, kept the Muhlenberg senior out of competition until last weekend, when she ran in the Dickinson Invitational. She finished fifth among Muhlenberg runners in the 4-kilometer race.

“It was very frustrating at the beginning of the season,” Miles admitted. “I’m still getting back into racing shape. I’m looking forward to the Conference meet in three weeks. I feel like I’ll be able to have a good race there.”

Injuries are the only thing that can keep Miles’ mileage down. She has a wide variety of hobbies and interests that keep her moving, both on campus and off.

Miles takes a big vacation with her family every year. She’s been to Alaska twice, Hawaii twice, and “pretty much all over the U.S.” Then there was the semester in Australia, during which she juggled her studies around trips to the Outback and the Northern Territories and even found time to go snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and hang gliding off a cliff.

Miles’ on-campus job gives her additional chances to put on the miles. She has worked as a student first-aider in the athletic training room since her freshman year and frequently travels with the Muhlenberg teams. She even went to Texas with the Mule women’s soccer squad earlier this year.

“I think it’s one of the best jobs on campus,” said Miles, who also works at her mother’s pediatric physical therapy office during school breaks. “Where else can you get paid to watch sports? [The trip to Texas] was a great opportunity to go to someplace different, and it was all paid for by Muhlenberg.”

Miles’ travel experiences are unique even in the classroom. She has the rare combination of a history major and a physics minor. “I had intended to study human movement and biomechanics in graduate school,” she explained. “Over the course of the past three years, I decided it’s not exactly what I want to do. I’ve always had an interest in history. Hopefully when I apply to graduate school they’ll look at the physics and see that I had a well-rounded education.”
