Moravian intercepted six passes and held a near two-to-one time of possession advantage to stun Muhlenberg, 17-7, in the traditional game between Lehigh Valley rivals.

Despite the loss, the Mules clinched a share of their first Centennial Conference championship since 1986 when Western Maryland lost to Johns Hopkins, 21-14. The Green Terror will earn the CC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the basis of its head-to-head win. Muhlenberg awaits word on an ECAC bid.

Muhlenberg took a 7-0 lead late in the first half on a 3-yard touchdown reception by senior Michael Stankowitz, but never got within sniffing distance of the goal line again. Moravian began its comeback with a monumental 24-play drive that took up 12:02 of the second quarter, resulting in a field goal, and forced seven turnovers.

Two Mules reached milestones in the losing effort. Senior Joshua Carter caught four passes to tie Rob Lokerson (1991-94) as the team’s all-time receiver, with 169 career catches, and also broke what is believed to be the all-time Division III record for career yards on kickoff returns (2,189). Matt Bernardo gained 48 yards on 13 carries to become the first sophomore in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season (1,038).

Junior defensive end Mike Koth won the Bianco Award as the Muhlenberg MVP of the game after recording a career-high 10 tackles, including three for losses and 1.5 sacks.

Senior Bill Holsinger and sophomore Josh Carter won their respective weight classes at the Monarch Invitational, held at King’s College.

Holsinger captured the title at 149 pounds, while Carter took the heavyweight crown. Both won their title bouts on one-point decisions.

Junior Nate Yeasted recorded a one-point decision in the consolation final at 133 to finish third.

The Mules were fourth out of 11 teams with 83 team points. King’s won the event with 162.5 points. Click here for box score.

Junior Brendan Gallagher became the first Muhlenberg runner ever to qualify for the Division III Cross Country Championships by finishing 15th at the NCAA Mideast Regional, hosted by Muhlenberg at Lehigh.

Both Muhlenberg teams had excellent races. The men had their best finish ever, coming in eighth, while the women placed 10th for their best showing since the 1990 team placed eighth.

The Haverford and Elizabethtown men’s teams qualified for the NCAAs, and did the women’s squads from Moravian and Dickinson. The top eight individuals not from the qualifying teams earned invites in the men’s race, and Gallagher snagged the eighth and final slot.

The NCAA Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.

Gallagher’s 15th-place finish was the second-best ever by a Muhlenberg male runner, and he earned All-Region honors for the third straight year. Sophomore Rob Uniszkiewicz also made the All-Region team by coming in 23rd.

For the women, senior Katie Garrett finished 35th to earn All-Region status for the first time.
