Cal Lutheran amassed 418 yards of total offense and a near 10-minute advantge in time of possession en route to defeating Muhlenberg, 44-20, in the Lutheran Brotherhood Kickoff Classic. The loss snapped the Mules’ six-game winning streak.

Senior Joshua Carter had a big day in the loss for the Mules, catching six passes for 137 yards and returning four kickoffs for 124 yards. He totalled 275 all-purpose yards and also completed his first career pass.

Muhlenberg fell behind 14-0 after one quarter, but a long kickoff return by Carter set up a Mule touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Junior Justin Jones hit Carter in the end zone from 28 yards out to make it 14-7.

The Mules closed to within seven points again later in the quarter on the first of two touchdown runs by sophomore Matt Bernardo, but the Kingsmen opened the second half with a damaging 13-play, 82-yard touchdown drive and went on to score the first 16 points of the second half to pull away.

Senior Doug Folger led the defense with 15 tackles, while junior Mike Koth blocked an extra-point kick. Click here for box score.

• Women’s Soccer: Muhlenberg 1, Rhode Island College 0. Sophomore Dawn Iberer netted her second goal of the season 13 minutes into the second half to provide the game-winner for the Muhlenberg women’s soccer team over Rhode Island, 1-0, in the second day of games in the Kwik Goal/T.G.I. Friday’s Classic.

After a scoreless first half that featured some solid defense and great goalie play from both sides, Muhlenberg (3-2) was finally able to break the ice not long into the second half. Iberer tracked down a loose ball toward the left side of the Rhode Island goal and guided it in for what held up to be the game-winner.

Junior goalie Kim Laurino recorded six saves for her second shutout of the season, while facing nine shots. Melissa Carpentier made 10 saves for the Anchorwomen (1-1-1). Scranton won the tournament, and goalie Meghan Quinlan was named tournament MVP. Click here for box score.

• Men’s Soccer: Drew 1, Muhlenberg 0 (OT). Muhlenberg (2-1) lost a hard-fought battle to 17th-ranked Drew (4-0) in overtime as junior Russell Jaffe scored a little over two minutes into the first extra period to lead Drew to the Kwik Goal/T.G.I. Friday’s Classic championship.

Both teams could not capitalize on several potential scoring opportunities in regulation, and both defenses held strong throughout the intense battle on the field. Jaffe, who was named tournament MVP, won a game which was full of energy and emotion, both in the play on the field and by the crowd in the stands. The Mules finished 1-1 in their tournament. • Field Hockey: Drew 2, Muhlenberg 1 (OT). Drew (4-0) scored with no time left in the first overtime off a penalty corner to earn a hard-fought victory over Muhlenberg (1-2).

Drew took the lead with just over a minute left in the first half when junior Casey Rogers scored her first of two goals off a penalty corner. Muhlenberg tied the game with 1:42 left in regulation when junior Kristen Best scored her first career goal on a penalty stroke, the first goal Ranger goalie Jessica Kates has allowed all season. The Rangers, who had many breakaway chances in overtime, had Rogers net the game-winner off a penalty corner awarded to them as time expired.

Muhlenberg junior goalie Josephine Fasolino played very well in goal despite the loss, recording 16 saves (only one shy of her career best) and turning away many Drew breakaways in overtime. She moved into fifth all-time in program history with 274 saves. Click here for box score.

Muhlenberg went unbeaten, winning every game in all four matches, in marching to its fourth straight Buttermaker Tournament Championship. The Mules are the only team to ever win the tourney since its inaugural year in 1998.

In their first game against Misericordia, the top seed in Pool B, the Mules dominated the first two games, 30-17 and 30-13, before battling to win the third, 30-27, for the 3-0 victory. Muhlenberg set a school record for a three-game match with 20 service aces, with senior Laura Funsten and junior Dana Ferrelli each tying the individual record of seven. Funsten had 28 assists, while junior Meaghan Billie tallied 11 kills. Junior Jennifer Leigh contributed 11 digs and classmate Lisa Giammalvo recorded three blocks.

The Mules (6-3) clinched the tournament championship with a 3-0 win over Arcadia, 30-17, 30-18 and 30-25, a team they were victorious over in Pool play on Friday as well. Funsten dished out 30 assists, while Junior Dana Ferrelli added 12 kills and Leigh tallied eight digs. For the tournament, Funsten had 108 total assists to stabilze the Mule attack.

Despite winning the tournament, Muhlenberg did not place any players on the All-Tournament Team, which consisted of Kimm Grossman (Arcadia), Lisa Stewart (Cedar Crest), Christine Feichtel (Cedar Crest), Ashley Dixon (Misericordia), Gina Carbone (SUNY Farmingdale) and Jaclyn DiVittorio (SUNY Farmingdale).
