• Field Hockey: Muhlenberg 3, Moravian 1. Freshman Alexa Sterbinsky scored two second-half goals as the Muhlenberg (8-2) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat local rival Moravian (1-9).

The win earned Muhlenberg its first Matte Award point for the 2002-03 year. Moravian leads the standings 3-1 with women’s and men’s cross country and football still to be played this fall (all on Nov. 16).

The Greyhounds took the lead by scoring on a penalty corner with no time remaining in the first half. Senior Holly Pico tied the score with her fifth goal of the season, and the 17th of her career, just three minutes into the second half.

Sterbinsky broke the deadlock by reverse-sticking a shot past the Moravian goalie midway through the half, then blasted in a shot with 7:23 to play for an insurance goal.

• Women’s Soccer: Muhlenberg 2, Swarthmore 1. Junior Courtney Levine’s 10th career goal snapped a 1-1 tie in the 67th minute and enabled the Mules (5-6, 2-1) to escape Swarthmore with a Centennial Conference win.

The Garnet (6-6, 2-3) played giant-killer last week, handing Gettysburg its first CC loss of the season, and threw a scare into the Mules by tying the score at 1-1 with 26:28 to play.

Less than three minutes later, however, sophomore Rebecca Armstrong, who scored Muhlenberg’s first goal, banged a shot off the crossbar, and Levine put away the rebound for the game-winning goal.

Freshman Amy Schmidt recorded her first career point by assisting on Armstrong’s goal.

Senior David Vassilaros deflected the ball into the net with just 56 seconds remaining in regulation, giving the Muhlenberg men’s soccer team an important 3-2 Centennial Conference win against Haverford.

The Mules (7-4, 2-1) held a 2-1 lead for most of the second half, only to have the Fords (4-2-2, 0-1-2) tie the match with 7:53 left. With time

winding down, junior Justin Henning won a corner kick. Freshman Ryan Smallwood served the ball to the far post, where his older brother, junior Evan Smallwood, headed it across the front of the goal. The ball deflected off of Vassilaros’ shin and into the net.

The older Smallwood began the scoring late in the first half by knocking in a long cross from freshman Jose Ramirez, but Haverford, which was regionally ranked for two weeks this season, tied the score two minutes later.

Just 1:18 into the second half, the Mules regained the lead on a flurry of shots. First, Vassilaros hit the crossbar, and the rebound bounced out to freshman Chris King, whose long blast was punched into the air by the Ford goalie. Senior Tom Hartey collected the rebound and fired the ball into the net for his 10th career goal.

The Mules have already played three teams that were nationally ranked at the time of the game; this was their fifth game against a team that has been regionally ranked this season; and three of their next four games are against teams currently ranked in the top six in the region.
