Bruschi Named to All-Region Team: Sophomore forward Kristen Bruschi of the Muhlenberg field hockey team has been named to the All-South Region second team by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Bruschi was selected to the All-Centennial Conference first team after setting school record with 19 goals and 44 points. |
All-CC Teams Announced for Volleyball, Mens Soccer
Muhlenberg placed one player on each of the All-Centennial Conference first teams for volleyball and mens soccer. Overall, three Mules were honored for volleyball and five for mens soccer. The womens soccer All-CC team will be announced on Thursday.
Volleyball: Julie Lauro became just the fourth freshman in
the 10-year Senior middle Meaghan Billie received second-team honors. She was fourth in the CC with a .262 hitting percentage and also ranked ninth in blocks (0.76 per game) and 10th in kills (2.97 per game). Billie finished her career second on the Mules all-time list with 1,314 kills. Senior outside hitter Dana Ferrelli received honorable mention after recording a team-best 52 aces and averaging 2.08 kills and 2.26 digs per game.

Making the second team were seniors Michael Hochkeppel, Tom Hartey and Quentin McDowell. Hochkeppel, a midfielder, led the Mules with 12 points on five goals and two assists, while Hartey notched a pair of goals from his midfield position. McDowell anchored a defense that allowed only 19 goals and recorded 13 shutouts in 21 matches. Junior Evan Smallwood received honorable mention. He played at both midfield and back, recording three goals and a team-leading three assists. |
Mules Score Big Win in Home Opener
Coming from behind was the order of the night as the Muhlenberg wrestling team opened its 2002-03 dual-meet season with a win against three-time defending Centennial Conference champion McDaniel. The two teams tied, 23-23, but the Mules were declared the winners because they captured more bouts (six). McDaniel (3-3, 1-1) entered the match ranked 25th in the Division III preseason poll. It was the second time in three years that Muhlenberg defeated a nationally ranked Green Terror squad. Muhlenberg trailed, 24-17, heading into the final two bouts, but sophomore Jeremy Hart rebounded from a 6-3 deficit at the end of the first period to record an 11-6 win. McDaniel had one team point deducted at the end of the bout, making the score 23-20. The final bout of the night, at 141, paired two NCAA qualifiers from last year. In a tight defensive match, senior Nate Yeasted scored two penalty points in the second period and hung on for a 2-1 win. Freshman Dale Mills set the tone in the opening bout, falling behind early, 6-0, but coming back to pin his opponent 19 seconds into the second period. Senior Joe Salerno followed with a techincal fall at 157. Also winning bouts for Muhlenberg were juniors Bill Cummins (184) and Brendan Barrett (heavyweight). |
