• Men’s Soccer: Johns Hopkins 0, Muhlenberg 0. Gary Kane deflected a Muhlenberg shot off the crossbar in the eighth round of penalty kicks, sending Johns Hopkins into the Centennial Conference championship game with a 6-5 shootout win. The Blue Jays (16-2) will face Franklin & Marshall, which scored a 4-3 shootout win against Gettysburg after a 1-1 tie, for the title.

The Mules (13-8) missed their first penalty kick in the round of five, giving the Blue Jays a chance to win in the fifth round. But their shot went high, and senior David Vassilaros converted for Muhlenberg to tie the shootout at 4-4.

Both teams were successful in the first sudden-death round. In the next round, sophomore Chris Davis stopped the Hopkins PK, giving the Mules an opportunity to win, but their attempt went high. Matt Weill scored on his kick in the third sudden-death round for what proved to be the winner.

team to its fourth straight win, 44-13 against visiting Union.

Junior Matt Bernardo also had a historic day, running for 106 yards to become the school’s all-time rushing leader with 2,783 yards. Bernardo also went over 1,000 yards for the second straight season, finishing the day with 1,036.

Muhlenberg is 8-1 for the first time since finishing the 1980 season with that record and has a chance to tie the school record for wins next week at Moravian. The Mules have scored 40 points in three straight games for the first time since 1968.

Muhlenberg (8-1) dominated the first half, holding the Dutchmen (5-4) to 65 total yards and two first downs while opening up a 21-0 lead. The Mules were trying to record their third consecutive shutout – something they had not done since 1942 – but gave up two fourth-quarter touchdown passes.

Bernardo scored all three of his touchdowns in the first quarter. He ended the game’s opening drive by taking in a screen pass from Jones on third-and-8 from the Union 10-yard line. On Muhlenberg’s next possession, Bernardo went 15 yards on a third-down draw play to make it 14-0.

Junior Thanasis Petrakis’ fourth interception of the season set up Bernardo’s third touchdown, on a 41-yard pass from Jones with 1:13 left in the first quarter.

Jones later added scoring strikes of 13 yards to junior Kodi Shay and 18 yards to sophomore Mike Mrkobrad. Shay finished with seven catches for 114 yards, while Mrkobrad also recorded a touchdown on a 1-yard run.

The Mules intercepted four passes in the game and held the Dutchmen to 36 rushing yards on 28 carries. In their last four games, they have allowed 214 yards and no touchdowns on 126 rushing attempts.

Senior defensive tackle Jon Buglione had 3½ tackles for loss, including two sacks, and forced a fumble. Senior Jordan Wright intercepted a pass for the third straight week, foiling a Union drive at the 1-yard line.
