August 7: Muhlenberg Picked Second in CC Football Poll. For the second straight year, the Muhlenberg football team has been tabbed to finish second in the Centennial Conference preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors. The Mules received four first-place votes, two more than they did last year (teams were not allowed to vote for themselves), and a total of 62 points. McDaniel, which as Western Maryland has won or shared the last five CC titles, had 69 points and nine first-place votes. Johns Hopkins, a winner over Western Maryland in the 2001 season finale, earned the remaining first-place vote and 54 points.

The CC season kicks off with six non-conference games, including Kings Point at Muhlenberg, on Sept. 7. League play begins two weeks later.

August 23: Edwards Named Head Men’s Golf Coach. Muhlenberg has named Kevin Edwards as head men’s golf coach. He replaces Jeff Tipping, who left last month after coaching the Mules to three Centennial Conference championships in the last six years.

Edwards has been a golf professional ever since graduating from Moravian College in 1996. He is currently an assistant professional at Lehigh Country Club, the Mules’ home course. From 1996 to 2000, Edwards served as head and assistant professional at Southmoore Golf Club in Bath, Pa.

A PGA member with a two-handicap, Edwards has six Pocono Pro-Am Series wins to his credit and was a Nike Tour contestant at the Hershey Open in 1998. He organized the junior golf program at Lehigh Country Club and has conducted more than 1,300 individual lessons.

Edwards was a two-time All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection while at Moravian, helping the Greyhounds to a 53-3 overall record and the 1994 MAC championship.
