Junior rover Dan Miller of the Muhlenberg football team has been named defensive player of the week by the Centennial Conference.

Miller had 13 tackles in the Mules’ 40-32 win against Cal Lutheran and recorded his first two interceptions, which led to nine second-half points. He returned the first pick 25 yards to the 11-yard line set up a field goal, and the second 41 yards to the 8-yard line to set up the first of Muhlenberg’s three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Miller is the only CC player with two interceptions through the first two weeks of the season, and he leads all CC defensive backs with 22 tackles.

McDaniel running back French Pope was the CC offensive player of the week. He rushed for 135 yards and acumulated 250 all-purpose yards in a 27-7 win against Susquehanna.

Elsewhere in the CC, Franklin & Marshall defeated Catholic, 13-6, to move to 2-0; Johns Hopkins opened up with a 21-14 overtime win against Washington & Lee; Gettysburg fell to Hampden-Sydney, 37-22; and Dickinson dropped to 0-2 with a 27-3 loss at Hobart.

Sophomore Kristen Bruschi scored one goal and assisted on the other to lead the Muhlenberg field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Ithaca and a sweep of its two-game weekend trip to Upstate New York.

At 5-1, the Mules are off to their best start since 1990. They have won four in a row, all by a one-goal margin, and are undefeated against Division III opponents. Their last three wins were all by a 2-1 score, and Bruschi netted the game-winner in each one.

Against Ithaca, Bruschi set up senior Holly Pico for a goal late in the first half, then connected on a penalty stroke with 1:42 left in the second to give Muhlenberg a 2-0 lead.

Ithaca (2-2) came right back down and scored less than a minute later to cut the margin to one, but the Mules were able to fend off a flurry of penalty corners to escape with the win.

Senior Josephine Fasolino made 14 saves in goal. Sophomore Pamela Coakley recorded a defensive save late in the first half.
