Jones also scored the game-winning goal in the Mules CC opener in 2000, the year they won their first title. |
Junior Monica Jones drove in a direct kick from 30 yards out with 16:44
left to play for the game-winning goal as the two-time defending
Centennial Conference champion Muhlenberg womens soccer team opened
league play with a 3-1 win against McDaniel.
With the victory, the Mules (3-5, 1-0) extended their CC winning streak to 14 games and their CC home winning streak to 15. They are 33-3-2 in their last 38 games against CC opponents. Muhlenberg, which had lost four of its previous five, found itself in an early hole when the Green Terror (5-3, 1-1) scored a goal less than two minutes into the match. In the 14th minute, junior Dawn Iberer was taken down in the box, then converted the penalty kick for her eighth goal of the season. She is now tied for second place on the Mules all-time scoring list with 86 career points. The score remained 1-1 until the 74th minute, when junior Jennifer Gitto drew a foul outside the penalty box and Jones drove the ensuing direct kick into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. A shot by junior Courtney Levine bounced off the left post and into the net seven minutes later, giving Muhlenberg an insurance goal. |
