It took an extra minute or so, but the Muhlenberg mens soccer team
remained perfect in conference play.
Junior Nick Richardson scored the second of his two
On the Mules first chance in overtime, sophomore Adam Milberg served a ball to Evan Smallwood. Smallwood flicked the ball to Richardson for the shot. F&M goalkeeper Brian Costello got a piece of the ball, but it trickled into the net to give the Mules (8-2, 3-0) their first win since 1999 when trailing at halftime. Reserve forward Gerald Stoltzfoos put the Diplomats ahead with 1:25 remaining in the first half. Muhlenberg turned things up after the break. Richardson tied the game up in the 58th minute, heading in a Justin Marx corner. Marx now leads the Mules with four assists. Ive just been trying to do my best in practice, Richardson said. Coach gave me my chance and I stepped up. The Mules kept up the pressure after tying the game. They dominated the midfield and outshot the Dips, 18-4, in the second half, but were repeatedly turned away by Costello, who had 10 saves. We just kept pecking away and we finally got one to go in, said Richardson. This should give us some momentum. Muhlenberg will try to take its momentum on the road as it plays only its second away match of the year, Saturday at McDaniel. |
