WOMENS SOCCER FALLS TO MESSIAH
The Messiah womens soccer team, ranked 14th in Division III, scored twice in the second half to defeat Muhlenberg, 2-0. Despite being on the defensive for most of the first 45 minutes, the Mules (4-2-1) kept the Falcons (5-1) off the scoreboard in the first half. Messiah broke the ice on a long blast just 30 seconds after intermission and added an insurance goal off a corner kick in the final five minutes. Muhlenbergs two losses are to the teams ranked 14th and 24th (Scranton) in Division III, both by 2-0 finals. |
Mens Soccer Wins Fourth Straight
Senior Evan Smallwood scored the first two goals and assisted on
The game was the Mules final tuneup for Saturdays Centennial Conference opener against ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins. Muhlenberg will enter the game 5-1 and having outscored its opponents 20-1, while the Blue Jays have outscored their foes 22-1 in their 5-0-1 start. The Mules scored their first two goals off restarts. Smallwood headed in a free kick from just outside the box by sophomore Jose Ramirez in the 32nd minute. With fewer than three minutes left in the first half, Smallwood converted a pass from junior Nick Richardson after a shot off a corner kick went wide. Little more than a minute later, Smallwood set up Ramirez with a through ball to close out the scoring. Senior Brendon McKeown made three saves to record his second career shutout. The win gave Muhlenberg a 2-0 lead in the Matte Award standings for the 2003-04 year. The next scheduled contest is a womens tennis match at Moravian on Tuesday, Sept. 23. |
