Volleyball Drops Two at Amherst

The Muhlenberg volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Amherst Classic.

The Mules (6-9) are scheduled to play host Amherst on Saturday at noon, then Trinity is they lose and Middlebury or Eastern Connecticut if they win.

Muhlenberg had to forfeit the first two games of its match against Wesleyan because the team arrived late. In the one game played, Weselyan clinched the match with a 30-18 win.

The Mules then lost in four games to Middlebury. Sophomore Julie Lauro recorded 14 kills and sophomore Mary Henning had a season-high 35 assists.

FIELD HOCKEY SUFFERS FIRST LOSS

In a back-and-forth game between nationally ranked teams, McDaniel handed Muhlenberg its first loss of the season, 2-1.

No. 13 McDaniel (7-2, 1-0) scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke with less than seven minutes remaining. A Mule defender batted a ball from the air with her hand from the goal line and McDaniel senior Kim Camponelli converted the stroke.

After a scoreless first half, the Green Terror got on the board first in the second before Mule junior Kristen Bruschi tied it with her 11th goal of the season. Freshman LisaAnn Polt picked up her first career assist on the goal. She passed the ball into Bruschi inside the circle. Bruschi then got past a defender and beat McDaniel keeper Becky Arnold.

That was the last time the Mules would get anything by Arnold, who had three saves.

The loss snaps a 12-game ’Berg winning streak. The No. 7 Mules (8-1, 0-1) will look to rebound when they travel to Haverford Tuesday.
