Deja Drew: Men’s Soccer Falls in Overtime

For the second time in four nights, the Muhlenberg men’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss in double overtime, this time to defending national runner-up Drew.

The Rangers (8-4-1) scored with 3:20 left in the second extra period when a free kick from near the center line squirted through the Mule defense to an unmarked player in front of the goal.

The Mules (3-7-2) are winless in their five overtime games this season.

Drew needed only 10 seconds to open the scoring, tying for the fifth-fastest goal in Division III history. Muhlenberg knotted the score with 16:06 left in the second half, when junior Christopher King played a rebound back to senior Ryan Melchior, who notched his second career goal.

Sella Named Player of the Week, But Mules Swept

Sophomore middle Monica Sella of the Muhlenberg volleyball team was Monica Sella named player of the week by the Centennial Conference.

The second Mule to be so honored this season, Sella (right) hit .471 and averaged 2.71 kills per game to lead the Mules to their first two CC wins of the year. She had six kills in seven attempts in the final game of the Bryn Mawr match and was 6-for-8 in Games 3 and 4 at McDaniel.

Sella added four blocks in the match against Gettysburg, but Muhlenberg had its short winning streak snapped with a three-game loss.

The Bullets (18-2, 7-0) extended their overall winning streak to 16 and their CC streak to 25. The Mules (8-12, 2-4) were within 27-26 in the second game before Gettysburg scored the final three points. The Bullets then opened Game 3 by scoring the first 11 points and breezed to the win.

Junior Julie Lauro had team highs of 12 kills and 15 digs for the Mules.
