Mules Move Up in NCAA Rankings
Junior cornerback Mike McCurley of the Muhlenberg football team has been named co-defensive player of the week by the Centennial Conference. McCurley was honored after leading the Mule defense in a 17-3 win against Ursinus. He made a career-high 12 tackles and tied a school record by breaking up four passes all on third or fourth down and two in the end zone. Muhlenberg allowed only 111 total yards and held Bear quarterback Vince Gallagher, the CC leader in completion percentage, to 12 completions in 25 attempts. McCurley is the third member of the Mule defense to receive the CC weekly honor in the last four weeks, following in the footsteps of senior linebackers Dan Walker and Ryan Peer. The Muhlenberg defense now ranks in the top five in Division III in three team and three individual categories (see chart at right). In statistics for which the NCAA does not publish weekly rankings, the Mules lead the conference in fewest first downs allowed (53), most sacks (25) and best third-down conversion defense (19.8 percent). |
