FOOTBALL IN TOP 10 IN FOUR DEFENSIVE CATEGORIES

The Muhlenberg football ranks in the top 10 in Division III in four defensive categories after eight games.

Despite giving up a season-high 277 yards to Gettysburg on Saturday, the Mules are still No. 1 in total defense, allowing 171.5 yards per game. Mt. Union is second at 181.5. Muhlenberg’s next opponent, McDaniel, is 11th.

Muhlenberg lost its lead in rushing defense and ranks a close to second to Mt. Union, which is allowing 44.5 yards per game. The Mules will put their 45.3 yards-per-game average to the test against a McDaniel team that is 18th in Division III in rushing offense, averaging 262.0 yards per game.

After shutting out Gettysburg for the third straight time at home, Muhlenberg is tied for second in scoring defense with Mt. Union. The Mules and Purple Raiders have both given up 7.6 points per game, 1.1 behind national leader Trinity (Conn.). McDaniel isn’t far behind in fifth place at 8.4 points per game.

Muhlenberg has moved into the top 10 in passing efficiency defense for the first time this season. The Mules are sixth with 78.5 rating points; Alfred is first with 70.7. Muhlenberg has given up only three passing touchdowns – none in the last six games. The only team among the leaders that has allowed fewer passing TDs is ... McDaniel, with two.

Soccer Playoff Times Set

Both Muhlenberg soccer teams have qualified for the Centennial Conference playoffs and are scheduled to begin play Wednesday, Nov. 3, as they attempt to repeat as CC champions.

The fourth-seeded women will host Ursinus at 4:00. The winner travels to Gettysburg to take on the regular-season champion Bullets on Saturday in an 11:30 semifinal.

The championship is scheduled for Sunday at the higher remaining seed. Should the Mules and third-seeded Johns Hopkins advance to the final, Muhlenberg would host. Hopkins is not allowed to host playoff games because of its playing surface.

Women’s playoff schedule
Wednesday: (5) Ursinus at (4) Muhlenberg, 4:00
Saturday at Gettysburg: Muhlenberg or Ursinus vs. (1) Gettysburg, 11:30; (2) Haverford vs. (3) Johns Hopkins, 2:00
Sunday: semifinal winners, at higher remaining seed, 1:00

The men, seeded fifth, travel to Franklin & Marshall for a 2:15 game. The winner of Wednesday’s game earns the right to face undefeated Johns Hopkins, the No. 2-ranked team in Division III.

Should Muhlenberg advance to the championship game, it would be played either Saturday night at Swarthmore or Sunday afternoon at McDaniel.

Men’s playoff schedule
Wednesday: (5) Muhlenberg at (4) Franklin & Marshall, 2:15
Friday at Johns Hopkins: Muhlenberg or F&M vs. (1) Johns Hopkins, 5:00; (2) McDaniel vs. (3) Swarthmore, 7:30
Saturday or Sunday: semifinal winners, at higher remaining seed
