V-Ball Blanked at Amherst

The Muhlenberg volleyball team was swept in three games by the undefeated host school in the first round of the Amherst Classic.

The Mules (4-7), who dropped their fifth straight, were without three players who left for Massachusetts after their Friday classes and did not arrive in time for the match. They will be on hand Saturday.

Field Hockey Drops CC Opener

The Muhlenberg field hockey team was less than four minutes away from scoring a big win in its first Centennial Conference game of the year, but 14th-ranked McDaniel came back and won in overtime, 2-1.

The Mules (5-3, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when freshman Jillian Duffy deflected in Steph Light’s pass off a penalty corner. The Green Terror had two outstanding chances to tie the game, but sophomore Lauren Schram saved a penalty stroke late in the first half and freshman Nikki Rhoads notched her fourth defensive save early in the second.

The Green Terror (5-1, 1-0) converted its 13th penalty corner of the game to put in the tying goal with 3:04 on the clock.

The overtime period lasted only 1:29. McDaniel’s Caitlin Potter countered a Muhlenberg run with a 70-yard run of her own the other way, finishing with the game-winning goal.

This is the fourth straight year the Mules have played a top-15 Green Terror squad to a 2-1 final, but McDaniel has won the last three. Muhlenberg’s three losses this season are by one goal to the fifth-ranked team in Division III (Montclair State), in overtime to the No. 14 team and by strokes to 18th-ranked Juniata.
