It took the teams a half to warm up on a cold and windy day, but once they did, the goals came quickly, and Gettysburg came away with a 3-2 victory. Muhlenberg (3-7-2, 2-4-1) and Gettysburg (6-6-2, 4-2-1) kept each
Gettysburg, coming off a 2-0 victory over No. 20 Johns Hopkins, scored first, with a goal just 1:23 into the second half. Muhlenberg, playing into the heavy wind throughout the second half, was able to put pressure on the Gettysburg defense. Junior Maria Tranguch dribbled the ball into the box and found freshman Emily Burritt in front of the goal for a tipin at 66:08. The goal ended the Bullet goalies streak of 327 minutes without giving up a goal. Gettysburg came right back 16 seconds later, taking the ensuing kickoff down the field and regained the lead. The Mules kept their heads high and continued to attack on offense, faring much better going into the wind than the Bullets did in the first half. Muhlenberg tied the game at two with just over 13 minutes to play, as senior Katie Amari came in from defense to control the ball in the corner. She sent a cross through two defenders and junior Andrea Dello Russo tipped it beyond the Bullets goalie, who dove to her left to try to stop it. Gettysburg scored the winning goal with under 10 minutes to play by tipping in a rebound. Burritt collected her second goal of the season and Dello Russo recorded her team-high third. Tranguch assisted on her second goal of the year at a familiar site as the game was played at her alma mater, Emmaus High School. |
