The Centennial Conference announced Wednesday that Moravian College and Juniata College have accepted invitations to join the Conference as associate members in the sport of football.

The addition of Juniata and Moravian gives the Conference nine members Centennial Conference that sponsor the sport of football, joining Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Johns Hopkins, McDaniel, Muhlenberg and Ursinus.

The two schools will begin round-robin play in the Centennial Conference beginning with the 2007 season.

The CC has competed with seven members – the minimum need to qualify for an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship – since 2001, when Swarthmore dropped football. The addition of the two new schools will ease the difficulties most CC schools had experienced trying to find four non-conference games every year.

Muhlenberg, of course, already plays Moravian in the traditional season finale. The two schools have been scheduled to close out the year against each other every year since 1958, and now the game will have conference implications for the first time since Muhlenberg left the Middle Atlantic Conference for the Centennial in 1983. Moravian leads the all-time series against Muhlenberg, 30-21-2, but the Mules have won six of the last seven.

Muhlenberg hasn’t played Juniata in football since 1931. The Eagles have opened their season with CC opponent Dickinson the last four years.
