SCHEDULE SET FOR SOCCER PLAYOFFS

The Muhlenberg men’s soccer team has earned a berth in the
Jose Ramirez
Senior Jose Ramirez had a goal and two assists in the Mules’ final two regular-season games and is tied for second on the team with 12 points.
Centennial Conference playoffs and is scheduled to play Swarthmore in a semifinal match at McDaniel at 2:00 on Saturday, November 5.

The Mules (11-5, 6-3) are the third seed in the five-team tournament, whose winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. Muhlenberg tied for third with Johns Hopkins (11-2-4, 5-1-3) at 18 points apiece, but earned the third seed on the basis of a 4-2 head-to-head win.

Hopkins hosts fifth-seeded Gettysburg (7-5-4, 4-2-3) in a first-round game on Wednesday, November 2, with the winner to take on McDaniel (12-3-2, 6-1-2) in one semifinal match.

This tournament promises to be wide open. For the first time in Conference history, every CC team had at least three blemishes on its record.

Muhlenberg went 3-1 against the other teams in the playoff field, but dropped games to two teams that did not qualify (Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson). The Mules handed McDaniel its only CC loss, 1-0 at McDaniel on October 1, and also defeated Swarthmore by a 1-0 count.

The Muhlenberg-Swarthmore matchup pits the best offense in the CC against the best defense. The Mules scored a CC-leading 2.00 goals per game, while the Garnet allowed only nine tallies in 17 matches. Muhlenberg senior Christopher King leads the CC with 23 points and is tied for the league lead with 10 goals. Swarthmore goalie Reuben Heyman-Kantor sports a 0.47 goals-against average and had a scoreless streak of nearly 700 minutes earlier this season.

Muhlenberg has qualified for the playoffs in all five years since the CC went to a postseason tournament in 2001. The Mules won the title in 2003 but exited in the first round on the other three previous occasions, twice on penalty kicks and once in double overtime. Swarthmore was defeated by McDaniel last year in its first postseason appearance since 1991.
