The Muhlenberg volleyball team won a pair of 3-0 decisions against Albright and Pitt-Greensburg to move into the championship bracket of the Buttermaker Tournament.

The Mules (5-1) will meet
Julia Lamborn
Lamborn has 36 kills – three more than she had all of last year – in six matches.
Centennial Conference rival Dickinson at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with the winner moving to the championship match at 4 p.m.

Sophomore Jess Anselmi collected 10 kills and 14 digs for her first-career double-double as Muhlenberg defeated Albright for the second time in eight days in its first match of the day. Senior Julie Lauro had a team-high 15 kills and five aces to go along with nine digs and two blocks.

Albright staged a 7-3 lead to start the first game, but Muhlenberg took advantage by turning a few long rallies into points to stay close. Behind the serving of junior Kate Haggerty, the Mules collected six straight points to take a 17-15 lead. Up 21-18, Lauro served seven consecutive points, including three aces, to put the game out of reach. Two kills by Anselmi put the Mules on the right side of a 30-19 score.

The second two games were closely contested with Muhlenberg winning 30-28 and 30-27. Albright surged to a 22-16 lead in the second game. However, it would be the last time the Mules trailed all day. They called a timeout and followed it with a 12-4 run to take a 28-26 lead. Haggerty and Anselmi produced three kills each of the last two games while senior Mary Henning had three aces and 27 assists over that stretch.

In its second match, Muhlenberg defeated Pitt-Greensburg, 3-0, as Lauro collected 16 kills, three aces and two blocks. Junior Julia Lamborn had four blocks and senior Jen Weist accumulated 13 digs for the second consecutive match, moving her into fifth on Muhlenberg’s all-time list with 1,072.

The Mules used quick starts and strong play off of opposing serves to control each of the games against the Bobcats. Lauro recorded kills on three of the first five Muhlenberg points in each game giving it leads of 5-0, 4-0 and 4-0, respectively. The Mules were efficient against serves as the Bobcats only retained serve 11 times throughout the match compared to Muhlenberg’s 45 times. As a team, the Mules recorded 16 kills in the final game – their highest total of the day.
