A chaotic finish produced some excitement but not the tying goal as the Muhlenberg mens soccer team suffered its second loss in a row, 2-1 at home to Drew. The Rangers (5-5-1) scored two goals in the first 10:33 of the second half to break open a scoreless draw. The Mules (5-3-2) had an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half, but had one attempt hit the crossbar and another cleared away by a defender. After falling behind by two goals, Muhlenberg applied considerable pressure the rest of the game. With about 15 minutes to play, the Mules were foiled on a corner kick when a net-bound shot by senior Peter Palomaki was barely saved off the line by a Drew player at the post. Muhlenberg finally broke through with 2:36 remaining when sophomore Greg Leischner blasted in a shot from 35 yards out for his first career goal. The Mules won the ball right back and desperately tried to score the equalizer. They were scrambling to set up a corner kick with 24 seconds left when the Rangers made a substitution, stopping the clock. Muhlenberg was called for a foul in the box, and Drew cleared the ball away. Drew and Muhlenberg have played a game decided by one goal each of the last seven years. |
