Sara Gearin Muhlenberg junior Sara Gearin received the Sidney G. Weikert Sophomore Athlete of the Year Award for her performance during the 2005-06 academic year.

The annual award recognizes athletic achievement with accompanying campus contribution and strong academic record. It was established in 1973 by the Muhlenberg College Alumni Association in memory of the late Sidney G. Weikert, a loyal alumnus and former associate director of admissions at Muhlenberg.

Gearin earned varsity letters in three sports – cross country, soccer and track and field – during her first two years at Muhlenberg. Last year, she played soccer in the fall and ran track in the winter and spring, earning a spot on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll all three seasons.

In soccer, Gearin started all 16 games and recorded two goals and an assist. She won two medals, a silver and a bronze, as a member of relay teams at the Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, contributing to a school record in the 4x800. Outdoors, Gearin added a silver in the 4x800-meter relay.

Gearin was honored as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities on Saturday. Prior to receiving the award at halftime of the football game, Gearin ran for the cross country team at the DeSales Invitational, where she finished 11th out of 214 runners to lead the Mules to a third-place finish.
