Garbutt named player of the week

Men’s Golf Ends Up in Second

Biff SlocumThe Muhlenberg men’s golf team ended its own tournament in a familiar spot – second place.

The Mules shot a 314 on the second day of the Muhlenberg Invitational to overtake one team, but still finished 16 strokes behind Trinity. It was the fourth runner-up finish in six fall tournament for ’Berg, and the fifth second-place showing in the last six Muhlenberg Invitationals.

Sophomore Zachary Oyer tied for fourth with a 36-hole total of 152 and ended the fall season with a team-leading stroke average of 77.0. Junior Biff Slocum (above) tied for sixth at 155, and freshman Matthew Cohen came in with a 158 (tied for ninth).

The team Muhlenberg overtook, Allegheny, was ranked 22nd in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America Division III poll. Trinity received votes.

Kristin Garbutt Senior Kristin Garbutt of the Muhlenberg field hockey team was named Centennial Conference defensive player of the week.

Garbutt was part of an outstanding defensive effort in the Mules’ 1-0 upset of No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The defense warded off 25 penalty corners and held the Blue Jays to nine shots – less than half their average – in handing Hopkins its first regular-season CC shutout loss since 2005. Garbutt made a defensive save in the game as well as one in the 5-3 win at Swarthmore.

Garbutt leads the CC with seven defensive saves.
