Mens lacrosse was reinstated as a varsity sport at Muhlenberg College
in January 2001. The Mules played a club schedule in 2002 before
beginning full Division III varsity play in 2003.
In its sixth varsity season, Muhlenberg broke through in the
ultra-competitive Centennial Conference, qualifying for a playoff berth
in 2008 and earning votes in the national Division III poll.
Muhlenberg got off to an auspicious start in its first varsity season,
winning its first four games. The Mules struggled in the CC, but won their
finale to finish with a 5-7 record. The Mules once again won five games in
2004, including another four-game win streak, and set team records for
goals and assists in a season.
The program continued its progress in 2005, breaking school records for
wins and goals in a season. The 2006 squad defeated Franklin & Marshall and Swarthmore for Muhlenberg’s first wins against
established CC programs.
Muhlenberg sponsored a varsity mens lacrosse team from 1966 to 1980,
and the sport had club status from 1981 to 2002. The Mules play their home
games on the AstroTurf at Scotty Wood Stadium, which also is home to the
football, field hockey, womens lacrosse and track and field programs.
The Centennial Conference is one of the strongest Division III
leagues in the country. Washington (Md.) won the national championship in
1998, and Gettysburg was the national runner-up in 2001.
