SOFTBALL WINS CC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Muhlenberg softball team won the Centennial Conference championship outright by sweeping Washington on May 1 in the final league doubleheader. The Mules earned the CC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin May 12. It is Muhlenberg’s fifth NCAA berth and first since 1992. Standings through games of May 2:

CARTER, DREBY SWEEP WEEKLY PITCHING HONORS
Muhlenberg swept the Centennial Conference pitcher of the week honors for baseball and softball. Sophomore Joshua Carter (right) was honored as the baseball pitcher of the week for tossing a one-hitter to beat Johns Hopkins in the first game of an April 29 doubleheader. The Blue Jays came into the game with a .356 team batting average. Carter, also the ECAC South pitcher of the week, allowed only a sixth-inning single, which did not figure in the scoring, and struck out five. It was the second time in three starts that he took a no-hitter into the sixth. Senior Heather Dreby was softball pitcher of the week after winning a pair of games vs. Swarthmore and Ursinus, allowing just one run and seven hits while striking out 10 in 12 innings. She pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener vs. Swarthmore.

Monday, May 1
SOFTBALL Muhlenberg 16, Washington 3; Muhlenberg 4, Washington 2. The Mules captured their first Centennial Conference championship by sweeping Washington. The conference championship also results in an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin May 12th at a site to be announced. In the first game, the Mules trailed Washington until the top of the fourth, when they broke the game wide open, scoring eight runs and sending 14 batters to the plate. Freshman Kelly Berg played an outstanding game, going 2-for-2, scoring 3 runs and stealing 3 bases. Senior Christine Biechy tied a school record by hitting her fifth triple of the season. As a team, Muhlenberg batted just under .500, going 14-for-30. The nightcap remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Washington drew first blood. The Mules tied it in their next at-bat, and Biechy hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to drive in classmate Melissa Nardi for the winning run. Click here for box scores.
BASEBALL Delaware Valley 10, Muhlenberg 3. The Mules closed out their season with a non-conference loss. Sophomore Joshua Carter had three hits, stole three bases and scored all three runs. Click here for box score.

Tuesday, May 2
SOFTBALL Rowan 6, Muhlenberg 1; Rowan 6, Muhlenberg 4. The NCAA Tournament-bound Mules closed out their regular season by dropping a pair of games to 12th-ranked Rowan. Sophomore Lori Blanchfield had five hits in the twinbill, including a pair of doubles in the nightcap. Freshman Meghan Woods scored Muhlenberg's lone first-game run on a nifty slide at home plate after tripling. Click here for box scores.
LACROSSE Ursinus 17, Muhlenberg 9. The Mules closed out the season with a loss to 14th-ranked Ursinus. Junior Miruna Lovin had two goals and an assist to tie the school record of 60 points in a season. Junior Kerry Lambert scored thrice. Click here for box score.

Saturday, May 6
TRACK & FIELD women tied for seventh place and men in fourth after first day of Centennial Conference Championships. Junior Katrina Beck and senior Kurt Kunsch duplicated their indoor championship efforts and two school records fell on the first day of the 2000 CC Championships. Beck won the high jump with a meet record 5-4½ for her fifth career conference high jump title (she won outdoors in 1999 and indoors each of the last three seasons). Kunsch pole vaulted 14 feet, tying the meet record he set while winning in 1998. It was his third career conference pole vault gold. Kunsch and freshman Jason App (12-11¾) went 1-2 in the pole vault, and Kunsch also placed sixth in the high jump. Senior Matthew Capogrosso qualified for the finals in both the 100 and 200 meters. For the women, Beck set a school record in a qualifying heat of the 400 hurdles (1:09.94), and the 4x800-meter relay team set a school record of 10:09.74. Click here for Muhlenberg placewinners.

Sunday, May 7
TRACK & FIELD women finished ninth and men sixth at Centennial Conference Championships. The Muhlenberg men's team crowned two more gold medalists on the second day of competition. Sophomore Will Elson won the 800 meters with a school-record time of 1:54.73, marking the first time in the seven-year history of the CC that a Haverford runner did not win that event. Sophomore Jim Hayes led three Mules in the top six of the javelin with a throw of 175-2. He is Muhlenberg's first conference champion in the javelin since 1950. The 70 points scored by the men's team were their most ever at the CC Championships, although they finished a place higher in 1996. Sophomore Nancy Kegelman was the top scorer for the women's team on Day 2, taking the silver medal in the javelin at 116-8. Click here for Muhlenberg placewinners.
